Uranium has three crystalline forms, of which one is malleable and ductile. Uranium never occurs naturally in the free state but is found as an oxide or complex salt in minerals such as pitchblende and carnotite. After the discovery of nuclear fusion, uranium became much less of a strategic metal than in ancient days. It is still often employed in nuclear weapons, and more recently plasma weapons and power plants.
