Helium, like all other noble gases, is chemically inert. The major industry use for helium is as a heat-transfer medium in nuclear reactors, as it remains chemically inert and non-radioactive under the radioactive conditions. It is also used in inert-gas-arc welding for light metals such as aluminum and magnesium alloys that might otherwise oxidize.
